Do you’ve the summer season sodium blues? That bloated feeling after consuming a pile of potato chips or after guzzling soft drink all day on the beach? Are you curious why that’s happening? It’s all about the sodium and it appears that throughout the summer we’ve the tendency to eat meals greater in sodium more than any other time of the year. It’s a problem since consuming too much sodium over time can lead chronic diseases down the road such as high blood pressure and heart disease.

Summer typically brings about picnics and open homes where we’ve the tendency to see and consume a rise in the following foods:

  • Canned baked beans
  • Chips
  • Soda
  • Cheese puffs
  • Pretzels
  • Sauces or salad dressings
  • Hotdogs
  • Salts and spices on burger patties
  • Cheeses
  • Pickled meals such as olives or pickles

Luckily, we do have various other less sodium-filled options available to us. By enhancing more of these foods and less of the others, we will find ourselves with less bloat and much better health. Take these tips for instance:

  • Veggie Chips.  Don’t be shy! Baking vegetables is easy and they can give your diet a fiber bump while still pleasing that chip craving you could have. Preheat that oven to 350 and put down some parchment paper onto a baking sheet. After you wash your veggies, cut them into thin, chip-like slices (a mandolin is a lifesaver here!). Place them on the flat pan, drizzle olive oil throughout them, and afterwards spray with seasoning salt. Time your chips for about 10-15 minutes in the oven, and you are good to go.
  • No salt patties:Try making your hamburger patties as is (meat only!) and allowing your visitors to add their desired amount of flavorings and salt. Don’t forget that herbs such as basil or parsley have loads of taste and taste great on those newly grilled burgers.
  • Homemade baked beans:Check out Caroline Yoder’s recipe for Maple Baked Beans. They are delicious, vegan friendly, and all of the ingredients are low in salt (make certain to purchase the canned beans in ‘low-sodium’ form!)
  • Fizzy water:Although one can of soda, routine or diet, just includes percentages of salt, it can easily add up if you are drinking a lot of it throughout the day. Given all the various other negatives related to soda consuming, it does not make good sense to make this beverage your drink of selection anytime of the year. Instead, consider purchasing carbonated water and taste it with your preferred citrus fruits such as limes, oranges, or lemons.
