Yoga vs. Pilates: What’s Better for Building Strength?

As an avid practitioner of both Pilates and Yoga, I was interested to review a recent post in the NY Times comparing these two types of exercise based upon their capability to assist construct strength.

I try to do yoga a minimum of 3 times a week (for a minimum of 1 hour) and also struck the Pilates studio about 1-2 times weekly. I enjoy both, but was intrigued to see exactly what the science stated about the strength advantages.

The article mentions 2 researches. In one, researchers found that Pilates might assist build up stomach strength by as much as 20 %. This isn’t unexpected given that the Pilates technique is centered on building core muscles. Anecdotally speaking, I understand that if I up my variety of Pilates sessions to 3 times weekly, I’ll see a visible distinction in the feel and look of my abs within simply a couple of weeks. What’s less clear in the clinical testimonial is whether other locations of the body are enhanced too.

From individual experience I feel that both types of exercise can help total strength. Offered that there are a lot of ranges of Pilates now, some approaches (like the one I finish with the Megaformer that also integrates strength steps from the Barre Approach) advantage way even more than just the core. (My sore arms, legs, and abdominals can vouch for this!)

In terms of yoga, it’s a wonderful overall type of toning, although there too, it depends upon the method and level of intensity. (I have taken some yoga courses where I felt simply ‘relaxed’ while others I have barely been able to leave the door my muscles were so depleted).

So, while the information is interesting, I am not entirely persuaded that one is much better than the other for building strength. I think both yoga and Pilates can be very handy. The bottom line, as constantly, is to do the exercise that you like, do it with consistency, aim for range, and have fun!
